The Suffolk Coast stretches for 50 miles through heritage coastline and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  

There is much to do and explore from charming seaside towns and unspoilt beaches, to the sweeping countryside and quaint historic market towns inland.  

There are also some top class family attractions to boot!

Tide is out and sun is out at Pakefield beach | Suffolk Coast

Pakefield

A real gem on Suffolk’s sunrise coast. Pakefield sits on top of a cliff with  panoramic views out to sea and across the bay.

 Pakefield is a peaceful and understated village with pretty beach huts lining the promonade. The historic church is perched on the cliff above the local fishing boats that dot the beach. 

Being the most easterly point in the UK, Pakefield is a fantastic place to watch the sun come up over the sea. Whatever the time of year it is a fantastic experience.

The beach is dog friendly and there are plenty of local pubs and cafes on your doorstep to choose from.

Southwold

Southwold, this picturesque quintessential seaside town, is full of charm and character, really is a must do whatever the time of year. With its sandy beach and beach hut-lined promenade, pier and lighthouse, Southwold is the perfect destination for young and old, families and couples. 

The working harbour with its fishing boats and  stalls is definitely worth exploring.   

The home to the famous Adnams Brewery where guided tours are very popular with tourists and locals alike.

Oulton Broad from above | 2 miles from Pakefield on the Suffolk Coast

Oulton Broad

The gateway to the Norfolk Broads National Park, Oulton Broad is just two miles from Pakefield. It is a popular tourist and sporting centre with many beautiful sights to take in and a range of activities to try out.

You can hire a boat for the day to explore the tranquil waterways. A trip to the Waveney River Center which is upstream at Burgh St Peter is a popular choice. 

By foot you can walk from Oulton Broad to the Carlton Marshes nature reserve to explore the beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Dunwich beach | 15 miles from Pakefield | Suffolk Coast

Dunwich

In an area as steeped in history as the Suffolk Coast, it takes something special to stand out. Dunwich manages to do just this. Known as the lost city of England, this tiny village certainly has a story to tell.

Today, you can explore the village’s expanse of forest, heath and beach, at National Trust Dunwich Heath, learn more about it’s fascinating past at Dunwich museum and sample some of The Suffolk Coast’s fine fayre at award-winning coast and country pubs and inns.

Dunwich is 16 miles from Pakefield.

RSPB Minsmere | 17 miles from Pakefield on the Suffolk coast

RSPB Minsmere

My personal favourite, not just for the wildlife but for the varied landscapes of marsh, heathland, woodland and beach.

Not only nationally significant for it’s birdlife, Minsmere has the largest red deer herd outside of Scotland.

Minsmere was host to BBC’s Springwatch for three years.

There is a visitor center with a shop and cafe.

There are numerous walking routes across the reserve and neighbouring Dunwich Heath a National Trust reserve.

Minsmere is 18 miles from Pakefield.

Walberswick village green | 14 miles from Pakefield on the Suffolk coast

Walberswick

This pretty Georgian village is the diminutive neighbour to the ever popular Southwold. Just across the river Blyth it can be reached by car, or even better, foot from Southwold.  You can either walk by taking the  Bailey Bridge near The Harbour Inn or take the rowing boat ferry near the harbour mouth.

Home to two great pubs, a tearoom and a great beach, it’s definitely worth the effort. Walberswick is also a popular destination for crabbing. Crabbing equipment can be purchased from the local shops.

Walberswick is 15 miles from Pakefield.

Aldeburgh | 25 miles from Pakefield | Suffolk Coast

Aldeburgh

A bit further dwn the coast is anouther of Suffolk’s coastal gems, Aldeburgh.  

Aldeburgh has close links to the composer Benjamin Britten. 

It is also famed for its fish and chips which are incredibly popular. The high street has much to offer as does the promenade plus there is beautiful shell sculpture on the beach to the north of the town.  

A lovely stroll north along the beach takes you to Thorpeness and its mere, well worth a look.

Aldeburgh is 25 miles from Pakefield.

Beccles | 8.5 miles from Pakefield | Suffolk Coast

Beccles

An attractive Georgian market town made up of small market squares and winding streets, Beccles is set on the banks of the river Waveney.

There are lots of independent quirky shops, restaurants, cafes and even a Lido by the river.

The Waveney hotel has a great spot by the river. 

A local tip is to take the Black Dog Ferry which starts at Puddingmoor and takes you to Geldeston Locks where you can make your way back along the river bank.

Beccles is 8.5 miles from Pakefield.

Pleaurewood Hills Theme Park | 4 miles from Pakefield on the Suffolk coast

Pleasurewood Hills

An award wining theme park set in 59 acres of countryside to the north of Lowestoft. Home to much loved local mascot Woody Bear.

With over 35 rides and attractions. There is something for everyone of all ages, whether you are a thrill seeker or wanting a leisurely family day out.

Corton is 4.5 miles from Pakefield.

Gt Yarmouth Pleasure Beach | 14 miles from Pakefield on the Suffolk Coast

Hippodrome Circus

Britain’s last remaining total circus building, featuring the famous Water Spectacular. The Hippodrome Circus puts on world class shows all year round.

Based on the bustling Gt Yarmouth seafront it is a great option and something that the whole family will enjoy and remember.

Somerleyton Hall | 5 miles from Pakefield | Suffolk Coast

Somerleyton Hall

One of the finest Victorian stately homes in the Country is at the heart of this estate. Surrounded by twelve acres of spectacular gardens for you to explore with beautiful surprises around every turn. 

The main attraction is the historic hedge maze that was planted in 1846 and thought to be one of the finest in Britain.
